With only three weeks to go until the midterm elections, the tides are shifting and Republicans appear to be leading.
Former President Obama this past weekend advised Democrats to stop constantly criticizing people for being politically incorrect. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), whom many believe to be a potential presidential candidate in 2024, also said that the party is spending all of its attention on abortion rights instead of focusing on key topics of economic inequality, and legislation that can help Americans afford basic health care.
Younger Democrats also have their complaints to fire as they have said that the current party leadership was completely out of touch and are only focused on retaining their seats in Congress. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (Mich.), also said that there is a need for “new blood” to enter the party.
Other Democratic lawmakers are blaming President Biden’s low approval rates for the decline in support towards their party.
All of these accusations have come after several different polls have shown that the Republicans appear to have gained momentum in both their Senate and House races. This has led to Democrats worrying they might have been too hopeful too soon.
Obama and Sanders have both expressed a similar concern as they have both noted that it is possible that the Democrats focused too much on cultural issues like abortion, and not economic issues such as inflation.
Obama in an interview with “Pod Save America” noted that it is important for them to be able to talk about all people, that’s how they can gain the majority.
