The border crisis created by President Joe Biden is fueling an alarming rise in human trafficking.

The number of minors making the dangerous journey to cross the border surged under Biden’s open border policies.

Unaccompanied minors that make it across the border are able to avoid deportation and are turned over to sponsors in the U.S.

The Customs and Border Protection (CBP) found that the number of unaccompanied illegal alien children jumped from 33,239 in the 2020 fiscal year to 152,000 in fiscal year 2022.

So far, more than 70,000 unaccompanied minors have been taken into custody in the current fiscal year.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) takes custody of these unaccompanied minors before transferring them to a vetted sponsor in the U.S., typically a family member.

But a whistleblower in HHS is sounding the alarm on the department handing over children to criminals and sex traffickers after failing to properly vet sponsors.

Many of the children are being forced to work to pay off their debts to human smugglers who trafficked them into the U.S.

“Whether intentional or not, it could be argued that the U.S. government has become the middleman in a large scale, multibillion-dollar child trafficking operation that is run by bad actors seeking to profit off of the lives of children,” HHS whistleblower Tara Lee Rodas testified in a House committee hearing.

The New York Times reported that 85,000 unaccompanied minors were lost by HHS officials and the department ignored warnings of an “explosive growth” in illegal alien children being forced into labor since the border crisis began.

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) is demanding that FBI Director Christopher Wray make stopping the human trafficking of illegal alien children a “a leading FBI priority.”

“The FBI must mount a full-scale effort to locate these missing children and to bring to justice the criminals who are holding them in modern-day slavery,” Hawley wrote in a letter to Wray.

The Times found that HHS approved sponsors are sending children handed over to them into forced labor.

“The Biden Administration is morally responsible for their fate. The President lifted Title 42 restrictions on unaccompanied children in early 2021,” Hawley said. “Reporting reveals that HHS loosened vetting processes for sponsors and retaliated against whistleblowers who raised these concerns. As a result, thousands of children have been handed over to modern-day slave traders.”

Hawley said that the FBI needed to investigate the failures in federal agencies that aided and abetted the child exploitation crisis.

The FBI “must also investigate HHS and the Department of Homeland Security for their role in facilitating the exploitation of these children, in violation of the law,” Hawley stated.
