Three Key Takeaways:
Prince Harry’s public interviews and memoir jabs at the royal family have deepened his estrangement from King Charles III and the Court, reigniting tensions since the Sussexes left royal duties in 2020.
Royal experts warn that Harry’s ongoing media attacks risk defining Charles’s legacy—already tested by his cancer battle—and undermine the monarchy’s public image by fueling sensational headlines.
Despite Harry expressing a desire to reconcile, the family’s refusal to engage (e.g., ignoring his calls, winning a UK court ruling to revoke his security) suggests bridges remain burned and reconciliation is unlikely.
Prince Harry’s relationship with the British royal family has become increasingly strained since his departure from royal duties.
The ongoing situation has created complications for King Charles III’s reign.
And Prince Harry’s recent decisions have presented new challenges for the British royal family.
Prince Harry’s feud with the royal family is hurting the monarchy
Prince Harry has been estranged from his family since he and Meghan Markle quit their jobs as working royals and moved to Southern California.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex trashed the British royal family in interviews and with Harry’s memoir after moving to the United States.
Harry admitted in a recent interview with the BBC that he hoped to reconcile with his family.
King Charles III announced in February 2024 that he was battling an undisclosed form of cancer.
He and Harry have only met once since the cancer diagnosis.
Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams warned that the feud between Harry and his family is casting a dark shadow over the British monarchy.
“Charles’ reign is not being overshadowed by the feud, but it is being damaged by it because of the huge amount of publicity,” Fitzwilliams explained. “In Harry’s recent interview, he seemed angry and pretty gutted… It would be a serious problem for the royal family if he and Meghan launched further attacks.”
The New York Times reported that Charles’ reign is being defined by Harry’s outbursts against the royal family.
“It has become a familiar pattern for the 76-year-old monarch,” the Times stated. “Two years after his coronation, his reign is shaping up as both eventful and oddly unchanging in its core narrative: that of a beleaguered father managing a messy brood.”
The report claimed that some royal observers believe that Charles’ legacy as king will be centered on Harry and Meghan’s feud.
King Charles is being tested by Harry and Meghan
Royal expert Hilary Fordwich said that Harry and Meghan have tested Charles’ leadership.
“It has been extremely important and admirable that Charles has been able, despite his love for his wayward son Harry, to maintain royal protocol, family unity and to maintain the monarchy’s dignified public image,” Fordwich stated.
Charles has stayed above the fray after Harry escalated the feud when he moved to California.
“A lesser man might well engage in a squalid tit-for-tat public back and forth with Harry,” Fordwich said. His resilience, at such a vulnerable time suffering from cancer, has garnered the admiration of so many, now even more so, in stark contrast to Harry’s constant moaning.”
People magazine reported that Charles has stopped responding to calls and letters from Harry.
Harry took the royal family to court in the United Kingdom to have his taxpayer-funded security restored after it was pulled when he left for America in 2020.
A British judge ruled against Harry in the case.
Harry and Meghan running their mouths about the royal family has made reconciliation unlikely.
“The royal family cannot trust the Sussexes as they constantly go to the media to air their grudges,” Fitzwilliams said.
Prince Harry may have burned his bridges with his family permanently after airing their dirty laundry in the media.
